Welcome

This year I decided I wanted to create beautiful cakes...with no cake experience I found myself taking a wilton class. I fell in love with decorating cakes. One of the my favorite things about creating cakes are the tools. I want every tool imaginable to make decorating cakes easier. This blog will focus on my cakes and how I hope to continue to grow and progress as a cake decorator (if I can call myself that)

Twilight inspired

This was a very last minute cake...I wanted to incorporate the cover of every Twilight book, I missed Blue Moon though. Unfortunately I did not have time to do the flower.

As you can see, gravity on my apple began to take a toll on it and lost its shape. It did not have enough time to dry.

Princess cake

This cake was for Princess Aaralyn...it was a chocolate cake with strawberry mouse filling. I loved this cake...it came out beautiful! simply yet elegant. Hapy Bday Aaralyn!

3D Lightening Mcqueen Cake

My First attempt at a 3D cake. I carved the cake using a white flavor, which I will never do again. I guess it is a learning process... it crumbed everywhere! Next time I will use mud cake or pound cake! All and all I loved it!

The front view.
Side View...the tires I made of cupcakes!
Back View...this has to be made days in advance in order to harden. The hardest thing is to get it to stay on!
An aerial view...as you can see it was a huge cake! I made a base to make it look a bit more elaborate, but know I think the cake was elaborate enough!

Tiffany Box, and Sesame Street cake!

My Tiffany box cake...this isn't what I wanted it to look like, but I made it to order. I had a borrowed cake pan that just didn't work for me. The edges did not come out how I envisioned, however as I got closer the the finish I began to love it. Let me just say that making a box cake is harder than it looks!

Sesame street is one of my favorite shows growing up and my two year old son loves it! So I was excited to create this cake. My original plan fell through when I was planing it because my first plan required a lot of cake. So I researched a bit and combined a few sesame street cakes into one! I molded each figurine. By researching I found great advice on how to make the characters a bit more realistic. For example, with Oscar I used the grass tip (233) to texture him, with big bird I used the leaf tip (104) and used the bigger end to make "u" shapes all over his body and pulled some up to give him a feather look. With Cookie Monster (I know he looks fat) I just scraped him with a tooth pick.

For the bow, I made it the same day which I do not recommend because you need to give it time to dry, but since my first plan fell through I wasn't sure what I was going to do. Elmo was created out of color flow. It was my first time using color flow but it will not be the last. I loved how he came out. For the name, my hubby got me the cricut cake and I was able to just cut out the letters that way and they look perfect!

The other cakes will be coming later this month!

Roses, make up bag, and Kailan cakes!

This cake was for an anniversary. I was given a picture of the cake to use as a guide. This was my first time making fondant flowers so it was a bit tricky. I found some tutorials online to help, but i felt as if each rose was taking long so I bought a rose making kit from Wilton. It made each rose a lot faster. I then used royal icing to make the vines/branches. The leaves were a bit tricky because I did not have a cut out for that leaf. I had to print out a picture and use it as a guide to cut out each rose.

This make up bag cake was created for God daughter/niece for her birthday. Since she was turning thirteen i wanted to make it girly and a bit grown up. I found a pic of this cake online and decided to duplicate it. For the make up bag, i used a 6in round cake and cut off a piece to give it a purse shape. I did not cover this cake with fondant, instead a template of each side and cut fondant to that size then created the stitch design then froze it and then placed it on each side it the cake. All in all, it came out great!

This has been my most challenging cake thus far. To create each character takes lots of time and patience. I printed out various pictures of the characters on the Nickelodeon website and traced them on parchment paper. The tricky part was that I needed to trace each piece separately, for example, on kai lan i traced her hair, then to the side her shape of her head, then each circle of her eye, etc... Then used each piece as a stencil over the fondant.

I bought a clay tool to use to create the string of the balloon. I am unsure the name of it but it has disc's that you insert to squeeze through the size shape of the string to come out of. This was the first time using it and I will continue to use it because creating a same size string free handed is extremely difficult.

Tokidoki, Zebra, and Willy Wonka

This Willy Wonka themed cake was made for my husbands best friend. I used brown fondant and piped the grass with a star tip. The top hat was made with a 3in cake pan that I found at Michaels. The most challenging part of this cake were the letters. I downloaded the Willy Wonka font and printed out the letters and used them as a stencil on the fondant. The letters alone took me two hours to complete. I loved the end result it was a simple, but great looking cake.

I was asked to create a wedding cake this month. My first reaction was, "you do know I'm a beginner!" My friend said "Yes." It was a small, but awesome backyard wedding. The couple was surprised with beautiful decorations and the cake. They both love tokidoki. So, I tried to make this trendy new brand a bit classy. This is what I came up with.

This next cake was made for my niece's/god daughter's 8th grade promotion. She loves zebra pink and Hot Pink. One of my friends loved it, she asked me to make the exact same one the following week but in blue.

Captain Underpants and Dora

This month I had the opportunity to create two cakes. The first cake was created for my nephew who was turning 10. He chose his theme to be captain underpants. First I thought, "who in the hell is captain underpants." Then I remembered it is a children book. I borrowed one of my nephews book and traced the cover of the book on parchment paper. It was a bit tricky...the design is easy but I needed to make sure I traced the cape in separate parts. Once it was traced I rolled out the fondant and placed the parchment paper over it and tooth picked all around (now I found out I can get a paint brush and trace with piping gel). Once that was completed I took my embosser tool and cut around the holes. With a few stars here is my cake.

The inside was also great, I got the rainbow cake idea when watching the martha stewart show (you can get the recipe from her website). The kids loved it!

My Dora cake was created for my sister-in-laws boss. I was able to have fun with this cake because they said do what you want and we will pay. So i did what I wanted and this was the end result.

It was my first time doing figurines. If you go to youtube there are so many tutorials that teach you haw to make figurines. I had the hardest time putting on Dora's hair. In order to do boots and swiper I looked at fondant cakes online to mock their figure.

This is boots. I think he came out really good. I had the issues with Dora.

Swiper is my favorite. He came out perfect. Since he likes to hide and take Dora's things I hid him in between the leaves.

Practice Cake:

I do cakes with fondant, that is just easier for me. So, I decided I want to learn to do some icing flowers. So I learned to make roses out of icing and created this small cake.
