Captain Underpants and Dora

This month I had the opportunity to create two cakes. The first cake was created for my nephew who was turning 10. He chose his theme to be captain underpants. First I thought, "who in the hell is captain underpants." Then I remembered it is a children book. I borrowed one of my nephews book and traced the cover of the book on parchment paper. It was a bit tricky...the design is easy but I needed to make sure I traced the cape in separate parts. Once it was traced I rolled out the fondant and placed the parchment paper over it and tooth picked all around (now I found out I can get a paint brush and trace with piping gel). Once that was completed I took my embosser tool and cut around the holes. With a few stars here is my cake.

The inside was also great, I got the rainbow cake idea when watching the martha stewart show (you can get the recipe from her website). The kids loved it!

My Dora cake was created for my sister-in-laws boss. I was able to have fun with this cake because they said do what you want and we will pay. So i did what I wanted and this was the end result.


It was my first time doing figurines. If you go to youtube there are so many tutorials that teach you haw to make figurines. I had the hardest time putting on Dora's hair. In order to do boots and swiper I looked at fondant cakes online to mock their figure.


This is boots. I think he came out really good. I had the issues with Dora.



Swiper is my favorite. He came out perfect. Since he likes to hide and take Dora's things I hid him in between the leaves.


Practice Cake:

I do cakes with fondant, that is just easier for me. So, I decided I want to learn to do some icing flowers. So I learned to make roses out of icing and created this small cake.

April 2010 Mickey Party

I am a amateur cake decorator who decided that I wanted to create a cake for my son's second Birthday Party. Once I found the cake I wanted to create, I then said to myself, "I should create the invitations and everything else myself." I found myself doing more than I bargained for, but I got it done, with the help of a few friends of course (thank you Carol And Jannet). It was a Mickey Mouse Theme.



Here is the cake I created. It was the second time I had ever made a cake. I seen a picture of it online and decided to do it. It looked pretty simple. Its not perfect but I loved it. I made the ears two days in advance with fondant to allow it to dry. I made four circles then put two together with a toothpick in the middle.

I started planning by searching how to create invitations. I found this idea by accident and decided to create it. My husband bought me a sewing machine on black Friday and has been waiting to be used. I wanted to take on a new hobby and have never sewn anything. I bought black and red card stock and learned to sew it together. I glued on buttons with a hot glue gun. Then on publisher I created the ticket (it was also the first time I used publisher). To top it off I added a picture of my son in it as well. If you decide to create something like this you must keep in mind of finding an envelope. I had trouble finding a square envelope that would fit the invite. I had to buy envelopes on ebay and it required two stamps to send out. I sent out like 25 so it came to be pricy.

Since I decided on Mickey Mouse, I wanted to keep everything red and black with an occasional yellow. These are the goody bags I created for the children. I got red sandwich bags from a local party store and had left over card stock from the invites to use for the mickey silhouette. I used a pledge bottle for the large circle and an eye cream cap for the ears. I thought this was cute and simple.

I looked around for centerpieces and I found some nice ones at the local party store and thought they were too much, about six dollars each. They were made of cardboard with mickey and the gang. So, I decided to make my own to save money, but I spent about the same amount. I went to downtown L.A. and got six buckets (3 reds and 3 blacks), two sizes of Styrofoam balls (for mickey), Styrofoam stars, ribbon, and tissue paper and with a couple of hours this was created.
